The 48th Giro della Lunigiana began as it finished, with a new French victory as Paul Seixas, one of the favourites on the eve of the race, was able to outsprint Lorenzo Finn at the end of the Luni-La Spezia opening stage. Despite the heat the race was very fast with a breakaway of four men, Bessega, Viezzi, Andreaus and Bicelli, which characterised the central part of the stage. The group, which was more than 2 minutes behind, was brought back by the action of France, a prelude to the attack of Paul Seixas, who arrived at the bottom of the Biassa climb. Seixas crowned the GPM with 12 seconds over Finn, who took the necessary risks to come back on the following descent towards La Spezia. The two appeared in the final straight with enough gap to compete for the stage, which went to Seixas who repeated the success obtained by his compatriot Brieuc Rolland in 2021, also in La Spezia. At 1’05’ the chasing group, led by Pavel Sumpik ahead of Andreaus, Viezzi and Goszczurny.

PRESS CONFERENCE
Speaking in the press conference, the stage winner Paul Seixas said: “It’s a great feeling to win in La Spezia like Brieuc Rolland did in 2021. It’s a race in which we French have been doing very well in recent years. It wasn’t easy to catch the escapees, I decided it was time to take the reins of the peloton and my teammates did a great job. It’s nice to have such a strong team. It was a good duel with Finn, he was very strong on the descent. He will be a great rival for the Maglia Verde”.

Lorenzo Finn said: “I am satisfied with my condition, of course I wanted to win. Losing in a sprint always leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. I took the final climb with a 10-second disadvantage, but the gap remained the same throughout, so both Seixas and I were strong. Tomorrow is a tough stage, let’s see what we can do”.
